It’s my pleasure to kick off the start of the fall semester with some great news. The 2023 Louisiana legislative session made history by being the most successful ever as regards investment in LSU. The $232 million allocated across all LSU campuses included $3 million to fund the design of the new LSU Library and Learning Commons. The budget also includes a commitment of another $150 million for the construction of the 200,000-square-foot facility.
The significance of these results cannot be overstated: these funds constitute a solid commitment between LSU and state governmental leaders, the fruit of years of careful planning and discussion. At long last, LSU will have a library to equal its outstanding faculty and students, one capable of supporting the 21st-century collections, services, technologies, and study spaces that LSU requires.
The building will be located in the area between S. Stadium Dr. and S. Campus Dr., across the street from LSU’s new Interdisciplinary Science Building. As described in LSU campus’ Master Plan, our future library will truly become the new heart of campus, connected by pedestrian pathways, mass transit, and ample parking.
Our new library is certain to be more than this, however. This dazzling new building will be a powerful symbol of LSU’s academic aspirations and the excellence it offers to the citizens of Louisiana and the world. This is certain to be a thrilling year of discovery and possibilities, worthy of our best efforts and talents.
